How do I configure workforce types?

Six worker types — full-time to vendor worker — each with its own pay model, module eligibility, notice, durations and onboarding steps, editable per organisation.

Quick answer

Workforce types (Admin → Settings → Workforce types) is the policy matrix behind every worker category: rename the six platform types, switch them on or off, choose what each is eligible for (leave, appraisals, check-ins, surveys, celebrations, talent), and set notice periods, probation or engagement durations, TDS defaults for payout types, and an optional employee-ID series.

The six types

Full-time and part-time are salaried with full eligibility. Interns are salaried too — pay them a statutory-free stipend structure — but sit outside appraisals and the 9-box by default. Contractors, freelancers and vendor workers are payout types: no leave accrual, no PF/ESI, paid through Contractor Payouts with 194C/194J TDS defaults you can adjust.

What each setting does

The eligibility switches feed every corner of ASHR.work: leave accrual only credits leave-eligible types, check-in and survey invites skip ineligible ones, celebrations and the talent matrix respect their flags. Notice days prefills offboarding cases; duration prefills internship/contract end dates at hire; probation stamps probation end for salaried hires. TDS defaults seed each payout worker's rate card. Everything fails open — an unset policy never blocks anyone.

Where types show up

Pick the type when adding an employee (it drives which fields you're asked for), see it as badges across the directory and employees list, filter reports by it, and let recruitment carry it from the job opening through the offer to the hire.

Frequently asked questions

What decides whether someone goes through payroll or payouts?
The type's payment model. Salaried types (full-time, part-time, intern) run through statutory payroll; payout types (contractor, freelancer, vendor worker) are paid through Contractor Payouts with flat TDS and no PF/ESI.
Can I stop contractors from getting leave balances or survey invites?
Yes — that's the default. Each type has six eligibility switches (leave, appraisals, check-ins, surveys, celebrations, talent) you can flip per organisation.
Do interns get payslips?
Yes. Give an intern a stipend structure in Payroll — a single stipend line with no PF/ESI/PT — and they're included in runs and get payslips like anyone else.
